Simple Ways to Remain Active at Work, School, or While Traveling

You don’t need a gym to stay active. Here are a few simple ways to remain active throughout even your busiest days.

Have a busy schedule but still looking to remain active? Or pushing yourself towards a new goal? Small changes or additions to your routine are the difference in achieving your wellness goals. Use these simple tricks to stay active and improve your wellness.

Traveling/On Vacation

Tip 1: Use the right tools - Kevan Creighton, an athletic trainer with Structural Elements® Milwaukee, explains how traveling can take a toll on your body. Being proactive and traveling with the right tools, such as a foam roller or a lacrosse ball, can better prepare you for a more enjoyable and active trip.

“It can be as simple as sticking a lacrosse ball underneath your hamstring or behind your back on a flight, in a car, really anywhere,” says Creighton.

Tip 2: Explore your surroundings - Whether you’re traveling for work or a vacation be active and explore! Use it as an opportunity to get to know a place that you’ve never been to before.

“I would go run to explore the city I’m in. If you don’t want to run, go for a walk – anything to get your heart rate up,” says Creighton.

Tip 3: Pack a resistance band in your suitcase - This light weight, foldable tool allows you to get a full body workout in under 30 minutes. Perform 3 sets of 12 reps in each muscle group and you’ve got yourself an entire upper and lower body workout routine!

At Work

Tip 4: Stand up regularly - Something as simple as standing up now and then while at work could help curb the related health risks of sitting for too long. Aim for at least 2 hours during your work day.

Tip 5: Take an active lunch break - Rather than eating your lunch at your computer while checking your smartphone and answering emails, take a break and do something physically active. You will go back to work feeling refreshed, revived, and more able to concentrate for the rest of the day.

At School

Tip 6: Walk or park with a purpose - Take an extra 15-20 minutes out of your day and walk to class or park further away.

“You can avoid parking tickets and add more steps into your routine. Especially in the morning, this can help you wake up and feel ready to take on the day,” says Creighton.

Tip 7: Join a sport or active club - If you’re looking for more structure and accountability to help increase your activity, a great way to stick with the plan is to join a sports team, active club or class. This is a great way to make friends as well!
